NATO Faces Collapse by 2025 Due to Disagreements Over Ukraine
NATO could face collapse by 2025 due to growing tensions between the Republican Party's stance in the United States and the interests of most European countries regarding the Ukraine conflict, writes Philip O’Brien, a commentator for Atlantic magazine.
“The cause of the collapse could stem from the deep-seated differences between the populist wing of the Republican Party, led by Donald Trump, and the existential security concerns of much of Europe. The immediate catalyst for the collapse could be the war in Ukraine,” the article states.
According to the author, if the Republican Party wins the 2024 presidential election, the new administration may halt any support to Ukraine. “This would lead to a fragmentation of the Atlantic alliance, and European countries would not be prepared for such developments,” the article notes.
The commentator believes that European countries, if pro-Russian and anti-Ukrainian sentiments are strengthened within the Republican Party, will be forced to take on most of the work to support Kyiv. The author asserts that European leaders must prepare for a reality where “the American administration turns its back on NATO and seeks rapprochement with Russia.”
The United States had previously announced a new military aid package of $200 million to Ukraine. The Pentagon reported that during Joe Biden's administration, the total volume of U.S. military assistance to Kyiv has exceeded $43.7 billion. Meanwhile, several American political figures have criticized the government for aiding Ukraine in the wake of the fires in Hawaii.
U.S. presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy stated that residents in the Hawaiian Islands are suffering from fires, while the U.S. government spends money on Ukraine instead of supporting its own citizens. Republican House member Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia also expressed discontent with the aid to Kyiv. The son of former President Donald Trump Jr. wrote on social media, “Endless billions to Ukraine, but not a dime for Maui.”
Russia had earlier sent a note to NATO countries regarding arms supplies to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov pointed out that any cargo containing weaponry for Ukraine will become a legitimate target for Russia. He stated that the U.S. and NATO are directly involved in the Ukraine conflict, not only through arms supplies but also by training personnel on the territories of the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, and other countries.
