What to Expect After the Resignation of the President of Artsakh
Previously, we reported that the President of Artsakh, Arayik Harutyunyan, resigned. What can be expected after the president's resignation?
Months ago, initiated by Arayik Harutyunyan, the process of amending the Constitution began in Artsakh regarding the election of the president by the National Assembly in case the presidential office remains vacant during a state of emergency. According to these amendments, in emergency situations where the office of the president is vacant, the right to elect a president is reserved for the parliament.
The Artsakh National Assembly is required to elect a new president within a week. A session will soon be convened by the National Assembly with the agenda of electing a president. Each faction in the National Assembly will have the opportunity to nominate its candidate for the presidency, and the president will be elected in the parliament with a two-thirds majority of the votes from the deputies. If no president is elected in the first round, the two candidates with the most votes will proceed to a second round, where the election will be decided by a simple majority of votes.
