Hungary's President Says Talks on Ukraine May Be Possible

Hungary’s President Katalin Novák has announced that changes are imminent in the negotiation process for the peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian crisis.

In an interview with the Italian newspaper il Messaggero, Novák, who visited the Vatican last Friday, expressed confidence in the success of papal envoy Cardinal Matteo Zuppi’s mission, who had previously visited Kyiv, Moscow, Washington, and is set to travel to Beijing.

“I am confident that changes will occur soon. The fact that Zuppi has engaged in discussions with key figures and will now do so in China is an important moment and a significant signal,” said Hungary's president.

Notably, before his visit to the Vatican, Novák was in Kyiv, where he had a “long and sincere conversation” with President Volodymyr Zelensky. He believes it is time to discuss how to rebuild the world.

“I completely agree with Pope Francis, even if I cannot make a public statement about the existence of a specific peace plan. I am still convinced that we are closer to the realization of that plan now... but I cannot say more,” the president added.

In Moscow, officials have repeatedly emphasized their readiness for negotiations, but Kyiv has imposed a legislative block on them. They assert that peace can only be established on Ukraine's terms and following a return to the country’s 1991 borders.
