Our Approach is Clear, It is No Longer Time for Diplomacy, Macron Says on Artsakh Blockade
French President Emmanuel Macron gave an interview to Le Point, discussing the blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Le Point: You spoke about a broader Europe reaching the Caucasus... In 2020, you stated that Azerbaijan's reclamation of Nagorno-Karabakh was unacceptable, yet Azerbaijan has been blockading the region for eight months. Former prosecutor of the International Criminal Court Luis Moreno Ocampo has called the blockade genocide by starvation. What are you doing?
Emmanuel Macron: Our approach is clear: we grieve and condemn, but it is no longer time for diplomacy. We have always stated that we support the sovereignty of the people. The issue of Nagorno-Karabakh is complex. I cannot address the most acute aspects of this topic. France has clearly condemned the 2020 war and organized several humanitarian aid efforts. Today, we are doing everything to establish lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, to protect the people and cultures. This peace treaty is a necessity, but it must comply with international law.
Le Point: Even in light of the genocide process pointed out by international experts…
Emmanuel Macron: I would refrain from using that term hastily. We have a humanitarian situation that is unacceptable, particularly due to the closure of the Lachin corridor. France’s role is to exert pressure for humanitarian access, and we continue all our efforts to achieve that. In particular, we are taking measures to ensure the delivery of food and medicine and to maintain free access to Nagorno-Karabakh. Moreover, Armenia's own borders are at risk.
