Iran's Membership in BRICS Declared a 'Strategic Success' in Tehran

The Deputy Chief of Staff for Political Affairs of the Iranian President's Office, Mohammad Jamshidi, has described the Republic's membership in BRICS as a "strategic success." His remarks were quoted by RIA Novosti.

Earlier, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced during the 15th BRICS summit in Johannesburg that Argentina, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia were officially invited to join BRICS. He stated that the full membership of the new countries joining BRICS would commence on January 1, 2024.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has become a member of BRICS. The permanent membership of the group of developing countries is a historic event and a strategic success for Iran's foreign policy,” Jamshidi wrote on his Twitter account.

The BRICS summit is being held in Johannesburg from August 22 to 24, with leaders from China, India, Brazil, and South Africa in attendance, while Russia is represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Russian President Vladimir Putin is participating via video conference.

Currently, BRICS consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, but recently 23 countries have expressed a desire to join the economic bloc, six of which have already received invitations.
