VIDEO: 18 People Have Died in Forest Fires in Northern Greece
In northeastern Greece, a forest fire has resulted in the deaths of 18 individuals, likely illegal immigrants. This information was reported by the deputy press secretary of the fire department, Ioannis Artopios, during an emergency briefing.
The intense forest fire has been raging in the Alexandroupolis area since August 19, and efforts to control it have been unsuccessful.
“During the fire in Alexandroupolis, firefighters from the Avantas region discovered the bodies of 18 people near a structure. Given that no reports have been received from nearby areas about the disappearance of residents, services are now trying to determine whether these individuals entered the country illegally,” Artopios stated.
According to him, on Monday, emergency services sent evacuation notifications via the 112 emergency hotline in that area. Notifications were also relayed to the mobile phones of foreign networks present in the region.
The leadership of the Greek police has already set up a group to identify the victims of the disaster.
