Russia's Ministry of Internal Affairs Issues Order Limiting Interpol's Powers
Mariam Z.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has issued an order limiting Interpol's powers in Russia. Now, Interpol will only be able to conduct inquiries and request information from Russian law enforcement agencies, as well as identify individuals of interest.
Previously, Interpol had conducted full operational and search activities in Russia. The order from the Ministry of Internal Affairs is dated March 31 but was registered on August 17 and published today.
During discussions on the draft of the order in February, State Duma deputies accused the organization of 'malevolence' and suggested that its access to the Russian police databases could be used for espionage purposes.
