Over 100 Arrested in Pakistan for Attacks on Christian Churches
In Faisalabad, Punjab province, Pakistan, more than 100 people have been arrested after a mob attacked and set fire to several Christian churches and private homes. Authorities have deployed military units to curb the violence. Shops and schools remain closed. Several thousand security forces have been stationed in the eastern part of the city, in the Christian neighborhood. The provincial police chief stated today that 129 individuals have been arrested.
Pakistan's interim Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq Kakar condemned the violence, stating that all those responsible for the attacks on the churches would be held accountable.
The violence erupted on August 16 after images and videos circulated on social media, allegedly showing two individuals from the Christian community tearing and burning pages of the Quran, a holy book for Muslims.
