Heirs of Security Guard Killed by Azerbaijani Demand Life Imprisonment

The heirs of the security guard killed by an Azerbaijani soldier who illegally entered the sovereign territory of Armenia do not agree with the verdict, arguing that the court imposed a lenient punishment. They have appealed the decision, demanding that the Azerbaijani be sentenced to life imprisonment, reports 'Factinfo'.

It should be noted that the court of general jurisdiction in the Syunik region, chaired by Judge Napoleon Ohanyan, found Huseyn Akhundov, an Azerbaijani soldier accused of killing Armenian citizen and security guard Hayrapet Melikshettyan, guilty and sentenced him to 20 years in prison.

However, the victim's side disagrees with the verdict. Advocate Karen Alaverdyan, representing Melikshettyan's heirs, told 'Factinfo' that they filed an appeal to overturn the lower court's decision regarding the imposed sentence and to assign life imprisonment for Akhundov. The lawyer emphasized that the sentence handed down is not proportionate and does not adhere to the principles of sentencing, as aggravating circumstances were not taken into account.

'Only life imprisonment can ensure the goals of punishment, especially the preventive aim,' noted Alaverdyan, adding that the appeal has been submitted and there is currently no information about its acceptance into proceedings.
