VIDEO: No Political Force Has Submitted Application Yet for Yerevan City Council Elections

Applications for participation in the Yerevan City Council elections scheduled for September 17 have started today, but so far no political force has submitted an application.

Vahagn Hovakimyan, the Chairman of the Central Electoral Commission, announced this during a press conference today.

"According to tradition, our political forces do not rush and usually submit their application documents close to the deadline, often on the penultimate day, with the main excitement occurring on the last day," he noted.

Hovakimyan also presented some striking figures. As of July 14, the number of voters for the Yerevan City Council elections on September 17 has been recorded at 823,559. In the previous elections on September 23, 2018, this number was 848,000. The initially published number was 853,000, but by the election day on September 23, the number of voters in Yerevan was slightly more than 848,000.

"This means that in the past 5 years, the number of voters has decreased," Hovakimyan stated, explaining that this was due to changes in the Electoral Code in 2021, which resulted in the removal of citizens with identification documents expired by 6 months or more from the electoral roll.
