Criminal Liability for Him Corresponds to Norms of International Law: Azerbaijan's Prosecutor General's Office
“Criminal liability for Vagif Khachatryan, who was arrested in connection with the Meshali events, corresponds to the norms of international and national law.” This statement was made by Mahir Abbasov, head of the Azerbaijan Prosecutor General's office. His words were reported by the APA agency.
Mahir Abbasov noted that a number of events have taken place from a historical and legal perspective after the 44-day war in Nagorno-Karabakh.
“During the criminal proceedings of the Republic of Azerbaijan, our citizens, as well as those who committed crimes against the world and humanity, including war crimes, have been held accountable. Judicial penalties have been imposed on them that have come into legal force,” the official stated.
Emphasizing that holding Vagif Khachatryan accountable criminally corresponds to international and national legal norms, Mahir Abbasov stressed that this practice is present in Azerbaijan's criminal proceedings.
He also added that under the current criminal legislation of the republic, the statute of limitations does not apply for crimes against peace and humanity and war crimes.
It should be reminded that on July 29, Vagif Khachatryan, 68, was being transferred from Artsakh to Armenia for medical assistance accompanied by the International Committee of the Red Cross. During that time, representatives of Azerbaijan's border service abducted him.
