Foreign Political Figures on Humanitarian Crisis in Artsakh, Lachin Corridor, and Red Cross Activities
Azerbaijan is prohibiting the entry of trucks into Nagorno-Karabakh, claiming that Armenia is provoking tensions. Amid the humanitarian crisis in Artsakh, several foreign political figures have called for the immediate opening of the Lachin corridor, the improvement of the humanitarian situation, and the restoration of Red Cross activities.
The Netherlands' Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed concern regarding the humanitarian situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. "The Netherlands is seriously concerned about the humanitarian situation affecting the population of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region and fully supports Josep Borrell's statement regarding the need to reopen the Lachin corridor," stated the ministry’s post on Twitter.
The Spanish embassy in Russia has also supported Nagorno-Karabakh by referencing Borrell's statement. "Azerbaijani authorities must ensure safe and free movement through the corridor immediately and prevent the deepening of the crisis," the diplomatic mission conveyed in its Armenian-language post.
German member of the European Parliament Lars Patrick Berg has called for the opening of the Lachin corridor, urging the German government and the European Union to pressure Azerbaijan not to exacerbate the current situation. "It is entirely unacceptable that even humanitarian aid from the International Committee of the Red Cross is not currently reaching Nagorno-Karabakh from Armenia," Berg wrote.
British politician and member of the House of Lords David Alton has also expressed concern over the blockade of the Lachin corridor. "The Red Cross is worried that humanitarian aid is not reaching Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh. The United Kingdom must urgently raise this issue at the UN Security Council," Alton tweeted.
The situation surrounding the Lachin corridor and the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan was discussed by the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Iran. Jeyhun Bayramov reiterated that claims about the blockade of the Lachin corridor and the humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh are political manipulations. According to a statement from Iran’s Foreign Ministry, the parties deemed the presence and interference of foreign powers in the region as non-constructive, emphasizing the need to resolve domestic issues with the involvement of regional countries and actors.
During the phone conversation, the foreign ministers also stressed the importance of implementing bilateral and regional agreements reached in the areas of communications and the economy in the South Caucasus. Earlier, it was reported that representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Armenia, at the invitation of the Armenian government, visited the village of Kornidzor in the Syunik province, where trucks laden with humanitarian aid for Nagorno-Karabakh are stationed.
The diplomatic delegation included representatives from the following countries and international organizations accredited in Armenia: the United States, Belarus, Bulgaria, Spain, Italy, Iran, Iraq, Poland, Lithuania, India, the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, Switzerland, Romania, the Russian Federation, Serbia, Ukraine, France, the ICRC, and the UN.
