Trump to Be Charged in Capitol Riot Case
Former U.S. President Donald Trump is set to face charges for the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. This was announced by the former president's attorneys, Todd Blanche and John Lauro, during a meeting with special prosecutor Jack Smith, according to NBC.
On July 18, the U.S. Department of Justice sent a letter to the former president, stating that Donald Trump is under federal investigation related to the events of January 6, 2021. Subsequently, Donald Trump indicated that the Department of Justice had given him four days to testify in the Capitol riot case. Trump also remarked that he is likely to face charges and be arrested in connection with this case.
Since January 6, 2021, nearly 1,000 individuals have been charged in connection with the Capitol riot attempt, with over 460 pleading guilty to participating in the unrest.
The former U.S. president has already been charged with mishandling state top-secret documents after leaving the White House. The trial in this case is set to begin on May 20, 2024. The U.S. presidential elections are scheduled for November 5, 2024.
