A Cargo Ship Carrying 3,000 New Cars Catches Fire Near the Netherlands
A fire has broken out on the Fremantle Highway cargo ship near the Dutch island of Ameland, which was transporting 2,857 new vehicles. This was reported by Kommersant. It has been stated that one crew member lost their life in the incident, while several others have been injured.
There were 23 people onboard the ship. The crew members attempted to extinguish the fire independently, but it was later decided to evacuate them. According to Nu.nl, 16 people have been sent to the hospital. Some of the crew members were taken by boats, while others were evacuated by coastal rescue helicopters. After medical examinations, several individuals were sent to Groningen Eelde Airport.
According to Marinetraffic, the freighter was transporting 25 electric vehicles from Germany to Egypt. Preliminary information suggests that the fire broke out in one of these vehicles. The ship was operating without a crew onboard, and rescuers have attempted to prevent its sinking.
