Trump Charged with Three Counts in Capitol Riot Case
The U.S. Department of Justice has charged former President Donald Trump with three counts related to the Capitol riot that took place on January 6, 2021. This information was reported by NBC News, citing a letter received by Trump from the department.
The letter outlines that the new charges include conspiracy counts aimed at misleading the United States to overturn the 2020 presidential election and attempts to influence witnesses.
The decision to formalize the charges brought by the Justice Department will be made by a grand jury. According to NBC News, it is not mandatory for the jurors to bring charges only on the specified counts; there may be additional charges as well.
On July 18, Trump announced that he anticipates arrest in connection with the events of January 6, 2021, when his supporters stormed the Capitol. Trump stated that special prosecutor Jack Smith informed him on Sunday evening that the former president is under federal investigation.
Trump mentioned that he will appear before the expanded grand jury, which, as he noted, “almost always means arrest and charges.” This marks Trump's third criminal charge.
Also today, July 19, a federal judge rejected Donald Trump’s motion for a new trial regarding the sexual assault case against writer E. Jean Carroll, as reported by Reuters.
