The UK Foreign Secretary May Become Defense Minister: The Times

The UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly may replace Ben Wallace as Secretary of State for Defense, according to The Times, citing high-ranking sources. Wallace recently announced his decision to step down from both his position and politics.

Sources indicate that Cleverly is likely to be considered for the role at the Ministry of Defense, while Anne-Marie Trevelyan, currently the Minister for Indo-Pacific affairs, could replace him as Foreign Secretary.

Other potential candidates include Security Minister Tom Tugendhat, Leader of the House of Commons Penny Mordaunt, Deputy Defense Secretary James Heappey, and Chief Secretary to the Treasury John Glen.

It is expected that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will conduct a cabinet reshuffle in September. In June, Wallace informed Sunak that he would resign from the position of Defense Minister in September and would not participate in the next elections.

The next parliamentary elections in the UK are set to take place in January 2025.
