Timeline for Yerevan City Council Elections Announced

The timeline for the Yerevan City Council elections will likely be determined in the upcoming session scheduled for Tuesday, July 18. This was announced to Sputnik Armenia by the Chairman of the Central Electoral Commission, Vahagn Hovakimyan.

However, certain dates concerning electoral processes can already be precisely calculated since they are stipulated by law based on the election date. “Nominations start no earlier than 45 days before the voting and will last until no later than 35 days before the voting day. By simple mathematical calculation, it can be determined that nominations will occur between August 3-13. The campaign is expected to start on August 23 and last until September 15, inclusive,” said Hovakimyan.

The government of Armenia confirmed the date for the Yerevan City Council elections in its session on July 13, setting them for September 17 this year.

Hovakimyan also reminded that individuals who are at least 18 years old and possess electoral rights, as well as non-citizen residents who have been registered in the community for at least one year, may be included in the city council list. The candidate for mayor must be an Armenian citizen and at least 30 years old.

“This norm applies only when the council is elected. Until then, everyone has equal status, regardless of whether they are the first on the list or not,” clarified Hovakimyan.
