NATO Summit Outcomes Are Positive, But an Invitation to Join Would Have Made Them Ideal - Zelensky
The decision by NATO leaders that Ukraine does not need a "Membership Action Plan" to join the North Atlantic alliance is a significant outcome of the ongoing summit in Vilnius. This was stated by Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Zelensky made this statement at a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, as reported by gordonua.com. He said that Ukraine has come a long way in achieving interoperability with NATO and has fresh experience in cooperating with the Alliance's members.
"The proficient use of NATO weapons by our soldiers demonstrated that global democracy is stronger than any terrorist threat from anyone," he added.
"We truly appreciate the recognition that a 'Membership Action Plan' is not necessary. I would really have liked us to have success today at the summit for all of us—Ukraine, our soldiers, our citizens, and our children," he continued.
According to Zelensky, today the G7 countries can agree on security guarantees for Ukraine. "And I believe that if this happens, we will work on it; this will be a truly important concrete success for us. It can be noted that the summit outcomes are good, but if there were an invitation, they would have been ideal," Zelensky concluded.
