China Warns Against US Providing Cluster Munitions to Ukraine

The spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry, Mao Ning, has stated that the supply of cluster munitions by the United States to Ukraine could lead to humanitarian issues. He urged caution regarding the decision to transport such munitions to Ukraine. This was reported by kommersant.ru.

“Many countries have expressed opposition; irresponsible supplies of cluster munitions can easily lead to humanitarian problems. Humanitarian and military security issues must be addressed in a balanced manner, and the supply of cluster munitions should be approached with restraint and caution,” said Mao Ning during a press briefing.

He added, “The relevant parties should not pour oil on the fire or escalate the contradictions that will lead to an intensification of the Ukrainian crisis.”

Recall that the United States announced on July 7 its decision to transfer cluster munitions to Ukraine. Their use is prohibited by an international convention ratified by 123 countries, including the US, Russia, Ukraine, China, and Israel.

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan informed reporters that Ukraine has assured the United States in writing that the cluster munitions provided by Washington will not be used in Russian territory or populated areas. Sullivan made this statement after several Democratic lawmakers expressed concern about President Joe Biden's administration's decision to supply cluster munitions to Kyiv.

It is worth noting that on Friday, the United States announced it would supply Kyiv with cluster munitions as part of a new $800 million security package.
