Exceeding Speed Limits Will Result in Vehicle Seizure: Austria's New Legislation

The Austrian parliament has approved a bill that allows authorities to seize vehicles from drivers who significantly exceed the permissible speed limits. This comes as reported by the European Truth in reference to AP.

The law stipulates the temporary confiscation of vehicles from individuals who exceed speed limits by more than 60 km/h in urban areas and by more than 70 km/h outside city limits. In case of repeated offenses, vehicles may be permanently seized and put up for auction.

Vehicles exceeding 80 km/h in settlements or exceeding 90 km/h outside of them may be confiscated permanently after just one violation.

This law is expected to come into effect in March 2024. Austria's Minister of Climate and Transport, Leonor Gewessler, stated before the law's adoption, "There is a speed at which a car becomes a weapon." She added, "Now we will put an end to that and ensure that offenders will immediately and permanently remove their weapons from their hands."
