Video: Lawyer and Journalist Attacked in Chechnya Hospitalized
In Chechnya, unknown assailants attacked lawyer Alexander Nemov, representing Zarema Musaeva, and journalist Elena Milashina from "Novaya Gazeta," who were in the republic for a trial.
Footage shows Nemov and Milashina have been taken to a hospital in Beslan. Reports indicate they were accompanied by Mansur Soltaev, the Ombudsman of the Chechen Republic.
Milashina recounted the attack: "They threw the taxi driver out of the vehicle, entered, bent our heads, tied my hands, and held a gun to my head. Somehow they were doing everything nervously and couldn’t properly tie our hands."
Nemov, who was beaten in Grozny, will not be present for the announcement of Zarema Musaeva's verdict. Initially, he planned to attend, but his condition deteriorated significantly. Both Nemov and Milashina are heading to Beslan for necessary medical assistance, according to reports. The second lawyer representing Zarema Musaeva, Alexander Savin, will be present at the trial.
It is worth noting that Zarema Musaeva is the former federal judge. Her sons are human rights defenders and opposition figures. In January 2022, she was forcibly taken from Nizhny Novgorod to Chechnya. Ramzan Kadyrov personally declared that everyone in her family were terrorists.
Earlier reports indicated that Nemov and Milashina were subjected to brutal beating, and all their equipment was confiscated. Milashina's fingers were broken, and she lost consciousness after the beating; her hair was shaved off, and green dye (“Zelyonka”) was applied to her head. According to reports, Nemov was also stabbed.
