Tajik Man Who Opened Fire at Chisinau Airport Dies in Hospital

A Tajik citizen, Rustam Ashurov, who opened fire on law enforcement officers at Chisinau Airport, has died in the hospital from injuries sustained during the attack. The death was reported by the Main Police Inspectorate of Moldova via their Telegram channel.

The shooting occurred on June 30. The 43-year-old Ashurov killed an airport security officer and a border police officer after being denied entry into the country. He was injured during his arrest.

It is noted that the man is accused in his homeland of the abduction of Shukhrat Ismatulloev, the first deputy chairman of Oryonbank. According to the Tajik Prosecutor General's Office, he fled to Moldova via Turkey with the intention of later hiding in EU countries.

President Maia Sandu declared July 4 a national day of mourning in memory of the victims.
