5.9 Magnitude Earthquake in Dagestan: What We Know
A 5.9 magnitude earthquake has occurred 100 km from the city of Derbent in Dagestan, according to the Dagestan geophysical service. No information on damages has been reported yet. Azerbaijan's seismological service assessed the magnitude at 5.5.
According to the Dagestan geophysical service, the earthquake occurred at 23:01 in the Caspian Sea at a depth of 8 km. The regional department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations reports that the tremors were felt along the coastal area.
"There have been no reports of damages from the duty services," the agency’s statement said.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) rated the strength of the earthquake at 5.4. According to the center, the earthquake was located 90 km from Derbent (population 105,000) and 46 km from the Azerbaijani city of Khachmaz (37,100).
EMSC claims that the source was at a depth of 35 km.
Meanwhile, Azerbaijan's Ministry of Emergency Situations has not yet received any information regarding damages. The Republican Seismological Center believes that the source was located at a depth of 65 km, 80 km from the Khachmaz region.
Earlier reports indicated that an earthquake was also recorded in Baku, prompting residents to evacuate their homes due to the tremors during the night.
