Restoration of 17th-18th Century Chapel-Tomb Begins in Hamletavan Village of Syunik
Restoration work for the chapel-tomb dating back to the 17th-18th centuries has commenced in Hamletavan village of the Syunik region, located within the Kapan community. The information was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of the Republic of Armenia.
It is noted that the sketch project for the restoration of the chapel and the improvement of the area has been approved during a session of the scientific-methodological council of the Ministry. The working project has also been confirmed.
"The Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia has granted permission for the stabilization, renovation, and restoration of the historical and cultural immovable monument, as well as the improvement of the area. The works for the improvement of the area and the restoration of the chapel are expected to be completed in 2023," the statement said.
The ministry states that there is little information about the chapel; it is presumed to have been built in the 17th century and is of a single-nave basilica type. The monument is in a semi-ruined condition, with the upper parts of the exterior walls and a section of the dome being dilapidated. In 2022, excavation work was carried out by the "Service for the Protection of Historical-Cultural Reserves-Museums and Historical Environment" prior to the restoration efforts.
