EU to Provide Military Aid to Ukraine Without Harming Union Members' Interests

As part of the first day of the summit in Brussels, the leaders of the European Union (EU) member states have expressed their commitment to continue military support for Ukraine. Their final statement clarifies that the aid provided should not jeopardize the security and defense of individual European countries.

The EU has summarized that they are ready to offer sustainable military support to Ukraine "for as long as is necessary."

"The importance of the continued efforts of member states to contribute to meeting Ukraine's urgent military and defense needs is emphasized, without compromising the security and defense policies of individual member states and taking into account the security and defense interests of all member states," the press release states.

According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, since February 24, 2022, allies have sent about 170 billion euros to help Ukraine, with half of the funds being financial aid and approximately 40 percent being military support.

The European Union's chief diplomat, Josep Borell, suggested this week to reform the European Peace Facility, which, among other things, finances supplies for the Ukrainian armed forces, for greater efficiency. In his view, military assistance to Kyiv should be long-term.
