A New Road Will Be Built from Goris to Vorotan, Bypassing Areas Under Baku's Control
The Armenian authorities plan to construct a new road connecting Goris to the Khot-Vorotan section of Syunik. This information was confirmed by the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia in response to a query from Sputnik Armenia.
“A road is planned to be built from Goris, which will join the Khot-Vorotan section. The design and budgeting documents for the mentioned road have been commissioned and are ready,” the ministry stated.
As for the 10-kilometer section of the Khot-Vorotan road under construction, the reconstruction of approximately 8 kilometers is expected to be completed by 2023. “There are certain issues related to a 2-kilometer section of the road, and work is underway to resolve these. This year, access will also be ensured for that 2-kilometer segment,” the department noted.
According to media reports, road work is also planned soon in the Vorotan-Shurnukh section, where a small part of the road, according to some maps, passes through the territory of Soviet Azerbaijan. There, too, a bypass road is expected to be constructed.
It is noteworthy that the need for the reconstruction of the Khot-Vorotan road arose after Azerbaijani representatives closed the Goris-Kapan highway. This road has become practically the only route connecting the village of Vorotan to the outside world. However, there have been two collapses on the Khot-Vorotan road, after which construction was halted for several months.
