Aliyev: 'The End of Peace Negotiations with Armenia is Also Needed by Us Today'
President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev spoke about the importance of concluding peace negotiations between Baku and Yerevan. 'The end of peace negotiations with Armenia is also needed by us today, but even more so by Armenia itself,' said Aliyev during a ceremony for the presentation of a combat flag at one of the military units.
According to him, a peace agreement should be signed based on the norms and principles of international law, taking into account the existing realities. Aliyev also noted that last October, Armenia officially recognized Azerbaijan's territorial integrity, and just last month even specified the dimensions of Azerbaijan's territory. He emphasized that these statements should also be put on paper, and Armenia must sign them.
'Only in that case can there be long-term peace in the South Caucasus,' he stated.
The President of Azerbaijan again raised the topic of the corridor, which is unacceptable for Yerevan, highlighting the opening of the 'Zangezur corridor' and the withdrawal of troops from Nagorno-Karabakh as important conditions for signing the peace treaty.
It is noteworthy that in 2021, President Ilham Aliyev announced his readiness to sign a peace agreement with Armenia. In March 2022, Baku presented its proposal for the normalization of relations, consisting of five points, to Yerevan. The Armenian side added amendments and sent back its version. Since then, there have been several rounds of negotiations at various levels between the two sides.
Recently, high-level Armenian-Azerbaijani meetings have taken place in Washington, Brussels, Moscow, and Chișinău. The next round of discussions regarding the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan at the level of foreign ministers is scheduled for next week in Washington.
