UK Could Lose Influence in NATO, Says British General
British General Tim Radford, Deputy Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe, has stated that the UK could lose its influence in NATO and its status as one of the leading military powers if it does not abandon its policy of reducing the army. He made these remarks in an interview with The Daily Telegraph.
Radford noted that the British army is too small and needs to grow. “We have influence in NATO; we are in a good position here. I am concerned that if we do not invest, create our own industrial base, and show leadership, we could lose this position,” the British general said.
In Radford's view, the British army does not have enough military personnel to respond to emerging threats around the world. He emphasized that the modernization of military equipment and armaments must take place in parallel with increasing the strength of the UK armed forces. Currently, the size of the British army is approximately 76,000 personnel, the lowest number since the early 19th century.
