Photographs: Case of Car Accident on Yerevan-Aramir Highway Resulting in Four Deaths Enters Court

The preliminary investigation of the criminal case initiated due to a car accident on November 3, 2022, which resulted in the deaths of four individuals, has been completed by the Regional Investigation Department of Armavir of the RA Investigation Committee.

As previously reported, on November 3, 2022, at approximately 18:50, a passenger 'Gazelle' van driven by a 61-year-old man collided with a 'ZIL' vehicle driven by a 46-year-old man on the roadway from the village of Mrgashat in the Armavir region towards the city of Armavir. As a result of the collision, nine passengers of the 'Gazelle' were hospitalized with injuries, while four passengers lost their lives.

The investigative actions revealed the causes of the accident. Specifically, factual data obtained during the investigation indicated that the driver of the 'Gazelle' was conducting intercity passenger transportation along the Yerevan-Aramir highway with at least 26 passengers, exceeding the technical capacity of the vehicle.

According to the results of appointed examinations during the preliminary investigation, it was established that the driver was significantly exceeding the permissible maximum speed of around 70.75 km/h on the road segment leading from the intersection of the village of Mrgashat towards the city of Armavir.

Based on the evidence collected, it was determined that the driver of the 'Gazelle' did not take timely measures to reduce the speed of the vehicle, even after detecting the 'ZIL' vehicle that was preparing to turn in the direction of traffic. Consequently, the 'Gazelle' collided with the rear right side of the 'ZIL', which was in a static position, thus causing the road traffic accident and depriving himself of the technical opportunity to prevent it.

As a result, four passengers sustained life-threatening injuries, and nine others were transported to a medical center with varying degrees of injuries.

Based on sufficient evidence, the driver has been charged under paragraph 3 of Article 342 of the RA Criminal Code. A preventive measure of home arrest and bail has been chosen for him.

The preliminary investigation has been completed, and the materials of the case, along with the accusatory conclusion, have been sent to court.

Notice: The person charged with the crime is considered innocent until proven guilty in accordance with the procedures established by the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Armenia through a court judgment that has entered into legal force.
