Petrakov on Victory, While Wales Player Reflects on Loss to Armenia
In the third round of the Euro 2024 qualifying phase, the Armenian national team visited Wales. The match ended with a score of 4-2 in favor of the Armenian team. More details here.
Armenia's head coach Alexander Petrakov emphasized that his team deserved the victory. “I came to Armenia to lead the national team to a major tournament. We prepared very seriously for the match. Since June 8, we have had a good training camp. On the 14th, Selarayan and Balekyan joined us. Functionally, we were well-prepared for the game. I believe we earned a well-deserved victory in this match; we managed to outperform the opponent on almost all factors. I am not surprised by the outcome of the match. In three days, we have a meeting with the Latvian national team. If we celebrate this victory today but then perform poorly against Latvia, this victory will have no value,” Petrakov said during the post-match press conference.
Wales team captain Aaron Ramsey spoke about the match. “It was a bad game. We were a bit naive. I can’t remember the last time we conceded four goals at home, and we can only apologize to the fans who were here tonight. We knew they would be aggressive up front. We worked on how to overcome the pressing. We created opportunities to score but conceded too many goals, all of which were very similar; we were too open. This certainly does not help in qualification as we need to win home games. We need to wake up; there are things we need to do better before we head to Turkey. There are still a few games left, but this one will hurt. We have to try to fix everything and win on Monday,” Ramsey was quoted by BBC Radio Wales.
