Armenia National Team Defeats Wales 4-2
In the third round of the Euro 2024 qualifying phase, the Armenian national team faced Wales. The match ended with a score of 4-2 in favor of the Armenian team.
At the end of the first half, our team was leading 2-1. The hosts opened the scoring in the 10th minute through midfielder Daniel James.
However, just minutes later, Lukas Selaran equalized for Armenia by scoring his first goal for the national team.
Then, in the 30th minute, Hrant-Leon Ranos scored to give Armenia the lead in his first official game for the national team, making it 2-1.
The Armenian squad started the match with the following lineup: Chancharevich – Tikinizyan, Chalysher, Mkrtchyan, Harutyunyan, Dashyan – Ivu, Selaran, Spetsyan, Barsessian – Hrant-Leon Ranos. The goalkeeper, Ognen Chancharevich, made his debut for the national team. It is noteworthy that 33-year-old Chancharevich, who has been playing in Armenia for five years with Alashkert, received Armenian citizenship and was called up to the national team for the first time.
An hour into the match, in the 60th minute, our head coach Alexander Petrakov made two substitutions, bringing on Vahan Bichakhchyan and Varazdat Haroyan. Shortly thereafter, Hrant-Leon Ranos scored again, registering a double and increasing Armenia's lead to 3-1.
But in the 73rd minute, the British reduced the margin again, with Wilson scoring for Wales. However, the joy of the Welsh team was short-lived; Selaran also netted a double just minutes later, making the score 4-2 with 15 minutes remaining, and that score remained unchanged until the final whistle.
After the match, the press service of the Football Federation of Armenia released a photo from the national team's locker room.
Thus, the Armenian national team earned its first points in the Euro 2024 qualifying phase, defeating the World Cup 2022 participants Wales on their home turf. Chancharevich had a victorious debut, Ranos scored a double in consecutive matches for the national team, and Selaran noted his first goals while also providing an assist. This match also marked the first official victory for Alexander Petrakov as the head coach of the Armenian national team.
The next match for our national team will take place in Yerevan on June 19, where they will host the Latvian national team.
