Tbilisi Ready to Once Again Assume Mediator Role Between Yerevan and Baku, Says Georgian Foreign Minister

Tbilisi is ready to once again assume the role of mediator between Yerevan and Baku, Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili announced during a speech in the Georgian parliament today, June 16, according to eadaily.com.

"Within the framework of the Peaceful Neighborhood Initiative, Georgia has previously taken steps to initiate constructive dialogue between the two neighboring countries. We express our willingness to continue our efforts in this direction," the official stated.

According to him, Georgia believes that its efforts aimed at ensuring peace and stability in the region will be effective. "We are prepared to make a significant contribution to this work," Darchiashvili said.

Following the 44-day war in Nagorno-Karabakh in the autumn of 2020, Tbilisi made humanitarian and diplomatic efforts to bring Yerevan and Baku closer together and initiate dialogue between them. In 2021, with the mediation of the Georgian side, 15 Armenian prisoners of war held in the capital of Azerbaijan were released in exchange for maps of minefields in Artsakh. Last July, the first bilateral meeting of the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan took place in Tbilisi.
