Armenian Company to Renovate Nuclear Power Plant Cooling Towers by End of 2024
The local contracting company, "M Group," is expected to complete the renovation of the cooling towers of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant by the beginning of 2024. This was confirmed by the plant's director, Movses Vardanyan, in an interview with Sputnik Armenia.
The contractor has failed to deliver the work on time; one of the towers was supposed to be renovated by the end of June 2022, and the second by the end of the year. It has been revealed that the contractor lacks the necessary qualifications for such complex work (the towers reach several dozen meters in height and require a high degree of precision during the job).
“Currently, one of the cooling towers has already been renovated, and the second is expected to be completed by the end of this year or the beginning of next year,” noted Vardanyan.
In the cooling towers, the steam that drives the nuclear power plant's turbine is cooled again in water and sent back to the plant (where it is reheated to turn the turbines). The nuclear power plant has 4 cooling towers. After their renovation, the plant will operate at a higher capacity than before, without the risk of overheating.
Additionally, the construction of a new open distribution device (through which electricity from the nuclear power plant enters the grid) must be completed within the next three years. The work has already begun, and a Armenian-Russian consortium won the tender.
