Expected Controversial Arrests at Yerevan State University and Other Armenian Institutions
The newspaper "Hraparak" reports that, according to its sources, controversial arrests are expected at Yerevan State University (YSU) and other universities in Armenia related to bribery cases.
On May 24, it became known that Haik Sarkisyan, the dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management at YSU, along with his deputy and two faculty members, Gagik Tonoyan and Armen Nersisyan, were arrested on charges of accepting bribes.
Notably, fresh details regarding Haik Sarkisyan's arrest have come to light. Sources at YSU informed the newspaper that Sarkisyan had only a month left in his term before new dean elections were to take place. He was reportedly aware that the university was passing information to law enforcement about him and anticipated that they would soon come for him. To clear his name, he decided to withdraw his candidacy for the new dean elections and leave YSU as soon as possible to avoid scandal.
However, as fate would have it, the week caught him off guard. Haik Sarkisyan did not manage to leave the institution before being arrested.
Well-informed sources from the newspaper indicate that these arrests at the university will not be limited to just this case. In the near future, it is possible that other deans and faculty members at YSU and other universities may also be arrested in connection with bribery cases.
