Ukraine Cannot Become a Full NATO Member Now: Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron stated that a solution needs to be found between the security conditions guaranteeing Ukraine and the possibility of its full NATO membership, which would provide immediate support and clear prospects for the country.

“Full NATO membership is not yet available (for Ukraine). Prospects will be discussed… A very clear message of immediate support and guarantees is necessary, and clear prospects are needed,” said Macron during a press conference in Chișinău on Thursday, where the second summit of the European Political Community took place.

Macron believes that such guarantees and prospects can be provided to Ukraine at the NATO summit in Vilnius scheduled for July.

“We are working on this topic in close cooperation with Chancellor Scholz and all our European partners. I will have the opportunity to visit Germany next Tuesday for deeper discussions with the Chancellor, including on this topic,” he stated.

Macron also responded to a question about the possibility of engaging with Russian President Vladimir Putin, noting, “France is always ready to speak with everyone.” He reminded that since the beginning of the events in Ukraine, he has communicated with Putin several times. “If such an opportunity arises, depending on the content, I do not rule it out, but there is no useful topic for discussion,” he concluded.
