EU Welcomes Intensification of Armenian-Azerbaijani Settlement

Ahead of the negotiations scheduled for two days later in Chișinău, the European Union has welcomed the intensification of the Armenian-Azerbaijani settlement over the past month. A statement by the spokesperson for the EU's foreign policy service emphasized the importance of both sides avoiding statements that could harm the peace process.

“It is crucial to maintain this historic progress and to avoid actions, including hostile rhetoric, that could jeopardize the peace process,” stated Peter Stano.

The statement noted that in recent negotiations held in Washington, Brussels, and Moscow, the leaders publicly reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to the 1991 Alma-Ata declaration, which recognizes the territorial integrity of Armenia at 29,800 square kilometers and Azerbaijan at 86,600 square kilometers.

“We commend Prime Minister Nicol Pashinyan’s courageous statement on May 22 regarding this matter, as well as Armenia's clear willingness to work on border delimitation. We also welcome President Aliyev’s announcement on May 25,” it added.

It was also noted that during the negotiations mediated by the European Council in Brussels on May 14, the parties focused on a number of key issues, particularly border problems, communication, humanitarian issues, and the rights and security of Armenians living in the former Nagorno-Karabakh region. While work continues on sensitive issues, the European Union emphasizes the need to build trust and provide leadership in addressing these issues to reach a comprehensive settlement.

The European Union reaffirms its commitment to supporting the peace settlement process and stresses that, despite the complex history of the conflict, all issues must be resolved exclusively through peaceful means and dialogue.
