Critics Concerned That Erdogan and His Allies May Manipulate Election Results

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan secured victory on May 14, gathering 49.5 percent of the votes in the presidential election, slightly less than the majority required.

However, his ruling Justice and Development Party has seen a decline of more than 7 percent in votes compared to the 2018 parliamentary elections. With the dynamics of the elections remaining unchanged, many doubt the prospects for change in the second round.

Both local and international observers have reported that elections in Turkey have not been free and fair over the past decade. Given Erdogan's control over key state institutions and his coalition with influential figures, critics are concerned that he and his allies may attempt to manipulate the votes to maintain power.
