Liquid Gas Shortage in Armenia: What is the Cause?

There has been a significant shortage of liquid gas in Armenia for quite some time now. Aysor.am spoke with Jirair Yapanechyan, the director of LPG Energy gas station, who indicated that the issue is not the importers, but the border checkpoints.

“All vehicles leaving Armenia are facing problems. It's not just Armenian vehicles, but also those coming into Armenia. Previously, we could cross into Georgia in 1-2 days, except in cases of snow or melting. This has been the case for the last 30 years. During that same period, or perhaps even earlier, our vehicles would return. Now, vehicles are leaving Armenia and entering Russia in approximately 12-15 days. This is why any type of product crisis arises,” Yapanechyan stated.

According to him, if all the storage facilities at Armenia’s gas stations were full, the gas supply would last only 7 days. “Apparently, the checkpoints have started to operate more slowly. If previously they would process around 250 vehicles a day, now they check and allow through only 20-25 vehicles,” he added.
