Berlin Proposes Sanctions Against Russian Nuclear Energy

German authorities have informed the European Commission about the feasibility of imposing restrictions on Russian nuclear energy within the framework of the 11th sanctions package, according to Western media citing a statement from the German Ministry of Economics.

"The federal government has expressed its support for including civil nuclear energy in the sanctions measures in consultation with the EU. This should be part of the next sanctions package," the statement reads.

On April 15, the head of the German Ministry of Economics, Robert Habeck, deemed it unacceptable that this industry has so far been excluded from sanctions. He acknowledged, however, that the adoption of such restrictive measures would require time and a transitional period for their implementation.

This step will require the approval of all EU member states. Nonetheless, Hungary has long been opposed to sanctions against Russia's nuclear industry and was prepared to use its veto power. As a result, according to Politico, the EU opted not to include these measures in the 10th sanctions package.

Subsequently, Brussels discussed the possibility of imposing sanctions on individual representatives of Rosatom and several other companies, but ultimately decided against it as well.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, who visited Moscow on April 11 for talks with Rosatom's head Alexey Likhachev, was planning to discuss the prevention of EU sanctions against Russia's nuclear industry.

On April 15, Germany disconnected its last three nuclear power plants from the grid.
