What Was Discussed in the Three-Hour Closed Meeting of the Civil Contract Party

The newspaper ‘Hraparak’ reports that the Civil Contract faction held a closed meeting yesterday, during which they discussed the agenda items for the upcoming National Assembly sessions starting tomorrow. The meeting lasted for about three hours.

A significant portion of the time was devoted to the issue of the prosecutor general's request to strip opposition MP Mher Sahakyan of parliamentary immunity. There was no consensus within the faction on whether to strip the opposition member of immunity or not. Some were inclined to forgive Sahakyan, arguing that it would mitigate public outrage related to the recent high-profile incidents involving government members. However, a source within the faction noted that supporters of this viewpoint were more focused on attacking the National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan, suggesting that if Simonyan is not punished, then the opposition member should also be forgiven.

Despite differing opinions, a political decision was initially made, and Sahakyan will be stripped of his immunity.

Additionally, it was mentioned that Alen Simonyan, acknowledging the hints from his colleagues, shared details about the recent incident involving himself, admitting that perhaps he should not have succumbed to emotions. He advised his teammates not to fall for provocations like he did, implying that anyone in his position would have reacted similarly.

It is worth noting that contrary to popular rumors, no one raised the issue of the speaker’s resignation during the faction meeting.
