US State Department Calls WSJ Journalist's Detention Illegal

The US State Department considers the detention of journalist Gershkovich, arrested on espionage charges, to be illegal. The Wall Street Journal reports that President Biden's special representative for hostages will address the issue related to their journalist.

Gershkovich, who is allegedly gathering information about a company within the Russian defense industry, recently attempted to appeal his detention.

Earlier, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Bloomberg news agency, and Politico called on Russian authorities to release American journalist Evan Gershkovich, who has been arrested on espionage charges. The journalist was detained in Yekaterinburg near the Uralvagonzavod military factory while reportedly gathering intelligence about the Russian defense industrial complex.
