Why We Can't Use the New Alternative Road from Armenia to Artsakh: Details
Although the 11 km long Tegh-Kornidzor road (known as the new route connecting Artsakh to Armenia) has been open for traffic since April 1, it does not serve the initially declared purpose.
The construction of the road was monopolized last summer. The issue is that this alternative road connects to a route built by Azerbaijan that lies within their controlled territory and reaches near Shushi, which has been blocked by Azerbaijani 'eco-activists' since December 12.
According to preliminary agreements between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the road was supposed to operate from April 1, but Azerbaijan is violating yet another agreement.
“The road is open, vehicles can travel, but the issue is that they cannot reach Stepanakert because the road is blocked by Azerbaijanis,” Sona Harutyunyan, the press secretary of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, told Auroranews, adding that the road is completely constructed, with the first layer fully ready. The second layer of asphalt will be applied in a few days.
Harutyunyan also noted that the completion date for the road is April 30, and if weather conditions permit, the construction will be completed within the stated time frame.
