Russian State Duma Discusses Consequences of Armenia's Participation in NATO Exercises

The Russian State Duma has addressed the consequences of Armenia's participation in NATO exercises. According to the Duma, Yerevan has made a "serious mistake." This was stated by Alexey Chepan, the first deputy chair of the Duma's international affairs committee, in an interview with Radio "Govorит Moskva." He remarked: "We will, of course, respond negatively. Armenia's position greatly disturbs us. Unfortunately, we understand that this is a serious mistake, and it will have certain political consequences."

According to the deputy, Armenia's chances of joining NATO are slim. He believes the main goal of the North Atlantic Alliance is to create a conflict situation at the borders of Russia: "The current leadership of Armenia is succumbing to these provocations." He added, "They are trying to flirt with NATO, but it is unlikely they will succeed in joining the alliance. Considering the situation in Armenia and the circumstances surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh, they do not need it. However, creating a complicated situation around the Russian border is very important for them. What they have not stopped and will not stop doing: NATO will play the Armenian card, and the Armenians — the current leadership of Armenia — are succumbing to these provocations."

It is noteworthy that the Armenian Ministry of Defense had previously announced plans to participate in two other exercises organized by the U.S. military command in Europe.
