Moscow Will Be Forced to Take Response Measures, Says Russian Foreign Ministry
The Russian Foreign Ministry has stated that following Finland's accession to NATO and the expansion of the alliance's contact line with Russia's borders, the situation in Northern Europe will change fundamentally. To eliminate threats, Moscow will have to implement military-technical and other types of response measures.
According to a statement published on the Russian Foreign Ministry's website, due to the more than doubling of NATO's direct contact line with the borders of the Russian Federation, a radical change has occurred in the Northern European region, which was previously one of the most stable areas worldwide. The North Atlantic Alliance has taken another step towards approaching Russian territory.
It is noted that Russia will now be compelled to undertake response measures, both military-technical and others, to neutralize national security threats.
“Concrete steps in defensive construction along Russia's Northwestern borders will depend on the specific conditions of the integration of that country into the North Atlantic Alliance, including the deployment of NATO military infrastructure and strike systems on its territory,” highlighted the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The statement also noted that by joining NATO, Finland has definitively renounced its identity and independence, which had distinguished it in international affairs for decades.
“Previously, Helsinki's policy of military non-alignment served Finnish national interests for a long time and was one of the important factors in ensuring confidence in the Baltic Sea region and, in general, on the European continent. Now that is already a thing of the past. Finland has become a member of the alliance, losing its unique voice in international affairs, one of the small, inconsequential countries,” concluded the foreign ministry.
It is worth noting that Finland is now part of NATO.
