Four American Media Outlets Call on Russia to Release WSJ Reporter Gershkovich

The New York Times, The Washington Post, Bloomberg News, and Politico have called on Russian authorities to release American journalist Evan Gershkovich, who was detained on charges of espionage.

“We urge the immediate release of Evan,” stated a written declaration from the four U.S. media outlets, published on Friday.

They express being “deeply concerned” about Gershkovich’s detention, who is a reporter for The Wall Street Journal. Meanwhile, the authors of the statement describe Gershkovich as a “respected journalist at The Wall Street Journal” and assert that his coverage of Russia has been “fair and accurate when reliable information was needed worldwide.”

“Evan’s detention is intended to have a chilling effect on independent journalism and to deprive the public of critical news,” the declaration notes.
