Gold License Plates to Be Auctioned Off: New Initiative

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has launched a legislative initiative proposing to change the procedure for issuing so-called "gold" license plates for vehicles. The draft has been published on the platform for public discussion of legal acts.

According to the existing law on ensuring road traffic safety, there are three types of registration plates: regular, desirable, and those in high demand. Regular license plates are allocated upon payment of a state fee, while the latter two can range from 36,000 to 8,000,000 drams, depending on the combination of letters and numbers.

The draft suggests introducing a new type of license plate with specific criteria that would distinguish it in value and letter-number combinations from other high-demand plates, with the right to use these being granted through an auction. The starting prices and the procedure for the auction will be determined by the government if the draft is adopted. If accepted, the new law will come into legal effect three months after its official publication.
