Medvedev: Putin's Arrest in Germany Would Be Equivalent to Declaring War on Russia
Russia's Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev commented on the statement made by Germany's Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann, which indicated that Berlin would be obligated to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin upon his entry into Germany. According to Medvedev, such a response would be equivalent to declaring war.
“Let’s imagine, it’s clear that this is a situation that will never happen, yes, but still, let’s consider that it has occurred. The current leader of a nuclear state arrives, say, in Germany and is arrested. What is this? This is a declaration of war on the RF,” Medvedev stated in an interview with Russian journalists.
The Security Council deputy chairman promised that in the event of the Russian president’s arrest in Germany, all Russian “means would fly to the Bundestag, to the chancellor's office, and so on.” “Does he understand that this is a casus belli, that this is a declaration of war? Or has he learned poorly?” Medvedev added.
He described Buschmann as foolish and partially insane, stating that decisions such as the International Criminal Court's order to arrest Vladimir Putin create “enormous negative potential.”
Medvedev also mentioned that he does not like the current Western leaders. However, he believes that “sooner or later the situation will stabilize, and contact will be restored.” He hopes that by that time, a significant number of the current Western leaders will “have retired.”
“If we were talking about, for example, a two- or three-year horizon, one way or another, we would have to communicate with them. But such a prospect is not visible,” the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council said.
It should be noted that Germany's Minister of Justice Buschmann explained that Germany would be obligated to arrest Putin on its territory due to the International Criminal Court's decision.
