Araik Harutyunyan Explains Why He Dismissed Ruben Vardanyan from Ministerial Position
On February 23, a government meeting was held under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Artsakh, Araik Harutyunyan. Among other issues, Harutyunyan discussed the dismissal of Ruben Vardanyan from the position of Minister of State of Artsakh.
“Recognizing the responsibility towards Artsakh and our people, and instead of ensuring the development of Artsakh and preparedness to face upcoming challenges, to maintain our resilience in all respects, I have made the decision to dismiss Ruben Vardanyan from the position of Minister of State. Given that I appointed Mr. Vardanyan to this position almost four months ago, I must emphasize that the conditions at that time differ greatly from the current situation both externally and internally. Nevertheless, I highly appreciate Mr. Vardanyan's efforts during this period regarding the elevation of international awareness about Artsakh and the solution of numerous internal issues during the blockade,” Harutyunyan noted and added.
“As for the speculations about disagreements between Ruben Vardanyan and I regarding foreign policy directions, I would like to state that our strategic goal is the Armenian, independent, and secure future of Artsakh. We both have the same understanding regarding the vital interests and red lines of the people of Artsakh. However, our short-term approaches have certain tactical differences based on our differing perceptions of certain factors, including the unpredictable instability of the world and the region, methods of protecting red lines, effectiveness in using Armenian resources and leverage, and the influence of geopolitical actors’ interests and levers. I would like to emphasize that we regularly have discussions and debates on these issues, including with the composition of the Security Council.
“It is unequivocal for me that there is no official in Artsakh who has an approach that diverges from our strategic objectives and envisions Artsakh as part of Azerbaijan. Therefore, speculations about integration with Azerbaijan, cessation of struggle, and other issues are utterly unacceptable; they are treacherous blows to the people of Artsakh. I am confident that regardless of individuals in power, the people of Artsakh will not cease their struggle for their rights and dignity on their land. Individuals are transient, while the struggle and national interests of the Armenian people (including those in Artsakh) are eternal. We are here to ensure the continuity of that struggle and the protection of national interests during the time entrusted to us. Whoever deviates from this path will face state and popular punishment for state and national betrayal. In tactical matters, the final judge is time.”
Araik Harutyunyan stated that he has proposed the responsibilities of Minister of State to the Republic's Chief Prosecutor, Gurgen Nersisyan, considering his professional and human qualities, demonstrated professionalism, fairness, principle, and commitment to the state.
