Video: 35 Years Ago Today, Askeran Dealt a Blow to the Enemy and Laid the Foundation for Future Victories
The residents of Askeran have a reason to congratulate each other today as it marks the Day of the Resurrection of Askeran. 35 years ago today, the inhabitants of the regional center and nearby settlements managed to deal a worthy blow to the enemy, laying the groundwork for future victories.
The events dedicated to the day began with a commemorative ceremony. Under the leadership of the head of the regional administration, Hamlet Apresyan, flowers were laid at the memorial plaque honoring the memory of the fallen freedom fighters of the Artsakh wars. A moment of silence was observed in the cultural center's hall.
Two days after the historic decision of February 20, 1988, an Azerbaijani mob reached the outskirts of Askeran from Aghdam. This was practically the first open clash, the first test that the residents of Askeran emerged from with dignity. The mob from Aghdam was unable to enter Askeran.
According to Slavik Arushanyan, leader of the initiative group for the Artsakh movement in Askeran, for the first time, leadership and the people united and defended Askeran.
The national-liberation struggle of the Artsakh Armenians was a monumental event in the history of the Armenian people. Many residents of Askeran have their own memories of those remarkable developments. The mayor of Askeran, Hayk Shamiryana, noted, “We must remember that many destinies were shattered for this purpose.”
Alosha Gabrielian, a member of the initiative group for the Artsakh movement in Askeran, proudly speaks about what happened 35 years ago, stating that the Artsakh movement was a pure movement led by pure people. “There was only one idea—to do everything to join the motherland, Armenia.” He assures that the slogan and demand of 88, “Unification,” is still relevant today.
Facing new challenges, Askeran remains steadfast and vigilant. “The heart of Artsakh, this eastern gateway, has always been part of the Armenian land...,” he says. The residents of Askeran are confident that the spirit of our struggle is alive, our demand is just, and we will achieve victory through our unity.
The solemn event was accompanied by performances from the Askeran Berd folk instruments ensemble.
