U.S. Support Is Not Infinite: Warning to Kyiv
The U.S. administration has warned Ukrainian authorities that Washington does not possess infinite resources to support Kyiv. This was reported by Reuters on Wednesday.
According to the publication, citing sources from American officials, “the administration has told the Ukrainian government that U.S. resources are not endless.”
“Everyone understands that this has to end at some point. And we would all like it to end as soon as possible,” the source said in connection with the military operations in Ukraine.
The agency presented the results of sociological surveys previously conducted in collaboration with Ipsos. According to this data, support among Americans for providing military aid to Ukraine has decreased. In April 2022, 73% of respondents favored military support. By the beginning of this month, that figure had dropped to 58%.
These estimates are based on a study involving 4,000 residents of the U.S. The publication mentions that Republican members of Congress are against providing Ukraine with unlimited military assistance.
The agency quotes former State Department official Jeremy Shapiro, who currently oversees research work at the European Council on Foreign Relations. He noted that the Biden administration is aware of the risks of escalation in Ukraine, and that assistance to Kyiv diverts Washington's attention from several other important issues.
Shapiro believes that the options for the U.S. administration to offer compromises to Kyiv and Moscow are limited, as Washington is afraid of appearing “weak.”
